Mr. Gareth
B.Sc., M.A.
Hi, my name is Gareth Murray. I come from a family of educators with a legacy spanning 100 years, beginning with my great-grandparents who taught at the historic Dorchester Academy in Georgia. I have two decades of teaching experience across multiple age groups, from elementary and middle school students to high school and graduate-level learners. My teaching journey has taken me across the United States, as well as to Ghana, England, Switzerland, and the Bahamas. Additionally, I am an active member of the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations (ASCAC), serving as a Mid-Atlantic regional vice president.
I created Your African History to support parents who want to give their children a fuller picture of what it means to be African. Too often when our history is taught, it begins with our experience in America as if we had no history before we arrived. In reality, our experience in America is less than 1% of the total history of our people in the world! If you study the other 99%, you will discover that our people have been making indelible contributions to humanity for thousands of years. Becoming more familiar with this history has the power to revolutionize the way you see yourself, your people, and your place in the world. This is a gift that I want to pass on to the next generation, which is why my lessons are intentionally designed to help learners of all ages connect the dots between the greatness of their African ancestors and the greatness within themselves.
Teaching my three children and the youth of my community their African history has been one of the greatest honors of my life, and I’m equally honored to be of service and support to you!
“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture, is like a tree without roots.”
— Marcus Garvey
